Chapter 12

Later that night, Juliette and her friends walked the streets of Belle Fleur. They were all too excited to sleep.

“It flew out of nowhere and I swear if I didn’t duck, that thing was going to smack me in the face!” Li said, laughing.

“You should have seen your face, Juliette. It was priceless.” Chesley laughed.

“I’m just glad you guys could be there earlier, and thanks for tonight. I don’t want to go rogue at midnight, which will happen in the next minute. There’s nothing for me to do tonight. I can’t sleep.” Juliette was glad they were with her, but she really wanted to just be alone tonight. She wanted to think about Victor and what she’d say to him when they were finally together.

“Well, we would not let you do this by yourself tonight. Too bad Alec went home with his dad,” Chesley said.

“Hey, someone’s up, not just us night owls,” Juliette said, glad to change the subject. She slowed down and peeked through the slightly open curtains that swayed in the late night breeze. She watched in curiosity as the woman inside suspended a book above her hand and spun it around with her other hand.

“That’s magic,” Juliette said. “She’s never had magic before.”

“That lady gives me the creeps,” Li said.

“She’s just like me. I got it a few days ago.”

The woman looked up and saw Juliette. She grasped the book and walked out of sight.

Juliette stepped back, now standing under one of the few lamp posts that worked on that street.

“That’s not good. I wonder how many more people have fallen through the cracks and still have magic?”

The woman opened her door, and walked to her front lawn, and stood behind her white picket fence. “Hi, Juliette.” Her voice quivered, and she wrapped her shawl around her shoulders.

“Um, hi.” Juliette stood frozen for a few seconds, wondering what to say.

“I like your shawl,” Li said nervously.

“Thanks. Like a true Floridian, anything below seventy degrees chills me to the bone,” the woman answered.

Juliette’s eyebrows shot up when the woman then opened her gate and walked past her manicured flower beds and said with a smile, “I trust what you witnessed will stay between us.” Her smile wavered as she studied Juliette’s face. “I think I’m a witch, like you.”

“I don’t know who told you that, but—”

“It’s okay. I know magic’s secret. The New Council told me to keep it quiet for now. They told me about you and they’ve already offered me a position with them. I’ve never felt like I belonged before.” She smiled. All I know is that one day I woke up differently. Every day I find out new things about the new me and I think I kind of like it.”

“Don’t trust the New Council. They’re not who you think they are.”

Juliette, Chesley, and Li walked quietly down the street. She turned and said, “How many of Belle Fleur’s residents have become supernatural, and how many are already on the New Council’s side?”

“This is really getting crazy,” Chesley said.
